YouTube Removes ‘Trending’ Tab, Introduces Charts and Personalized Content Recommendations

YouTube has officially retired its long-running ‘Trending’ tab, shifting its focus toward more personalized recommendations and its enhanced YouTube Charts feature. The platform announced that YouTube Charts—currently showcasing top music videos, podcasts, movie trailers, and more—will now serve as the primary destination for discovering popular and trending content.

In a recent blog post, YouTube explained the move by highlighting how the nature of online trends has evolved since the Trending page first launched in 2015. “Back then, a single list of viral videos could capture what was trending. But today, trends span multiple fandoms and communities, each with its own micro-trends,” the company noted.

YouTube says user behavior and content discovery methods have shifted significantly in recent years. Viewers now prefer YouTube Shorts, personalized search suggestions, and even rival platforms like TikTok to keep up with what’s trending. As a result, traffic to the traditional Trending page has seen a major decline, especially over the past five years.

  • YouTube Charts will take center stage, offering real-time updates on what’s hot in music, entertainment, and more.
  • Explore pages like the Gaming tab will continue to highlight popular content in specific niches.
  • YouTube plans to roll out more category-specific charts over time, giving users easier access to trending content based on their interests.

Support for Creators

Some creators had previously criticized the Trending tab for favoring big brands and mainstream media, making it harder for independent or smaller creators to gain visibility—even with high engagement. In response, YouTube is introducing more tools to support creators, including:

  • The Inspiration Tab in YouTube Studio, which offers AI-generated content ideas.
  • A new Hype promotional system, allowing fans to boost their favorite videos and help them reach wider audiences.

What This Means for Viewers

These updates aim to make content discovery more relevant and personalized, allowing users to see videos that match their unique preferences. Whether you’re into pop music, gaming, or movie trailers, the new YouTube experience will cater more directly to your interests.
